The 2nd edition of the Diabetes and Emotional Wellbeing Symposium, hosted by the Global Diabetes Initiatives (GDI) in Cameroon, recently concluded in Yaoundé. The event focused on the crucial connection between diabetes management and emotional health, gathering experts, advocates, and the community to promote a holistic approach to care.
Organized by GDI under the patronage of the Ministry of Public Health, the symposium was initiated by Cameroonian-born AC Matilda, who currently resides in the UK. The one-day event, held at Djeuga Hotel, saw around 1,000 patients tested for diabetes and provided with valuable education on managing or preventing the condition. This health challenge, while significant, can be controlled with proper care and attention.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Public Health, including professors from Yaoundé 1 Teaching Hospital, participated in the event, offering professional guidance. AC Matilda’s personal inspiration for the initiative came when her mother was diagnosed with diabetes, prompting her to help others in similar situations. As part of her ongoing commitment, she has opened a diabetes support center in her native village of Bali Nyonga, where volunteers assist other communities with diabetes awareness and care.
Global Diabetes Initiatives (GDI) is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to supporting people with diabetes, particularly in the UK and in developing countries like Cameroon.
